(1711–14) Periodical founded jointly by *Steele and *Addison. It appeared daily (with a long gap in 1712) and each issue consisted of a single essay, the vast majority written by Addison or Steele. Non-political, unlike its predecessor the *Tatler, it was supposedly produced by a club of gentlemen representing different interests (the member that the public took most to heart was the country gentleman, Sir *Roger de Coverley). It ranged broadly over the cultural and moral aspects of civilized life, in a manner which proved immensely attractive to a developing middle class of both sexes. The title was revived in 1828 for a political weekly, still published today, which in recent decades has been a lively and often radical voice on the right of the political spectrum, balancing the New Statesman on the left.
