Man and Superman
|
|
(published 1903, first performed 1905) Play by George Bernard *Shaw which reverses the Don Juan theme by having the hero, John Tanner, relentlessly pursued by the heroine, Ann Whitefield. The evolutionary 'life force' is on her side, and the play ends with their decision to marry, but not without a great deal of Shavian discussion of alternative programmes for mankind (such as the emergence of the Nietzchean Superman). Much of this is in the Act 3 dream sequence, 'Don Juan in Hell', which is sometimes omitted in performance.
