(koh-i-noor, 'mountain of light' in Persian) A large diamond in the *crown jewels. It was presented in 1849 by the Sikh ruler of the Punjab to Sir John Lawrence, the British commissioner. Lawrence forgot it and left it for six weeks in his waistcoat pocket, but it eventually reached London in time to become a prize exhibit in the *Great Exhibition of 1851.
