Antigua and Barbuda

Member of the *Commonwealth since 1981, consisting of two small islands in the eastern Caribbean. Barbuda was colonized by English settlers in 1628 and Antigua in 1632. Barbuda was for two centuries the private property of the Codrington family, to whom it was granted by *Charles II in 1680. The islands became internally self-governing in 1967 and independent in 1981.
