America's Cup
|
|
The most coveted trophy in international yacht racing. Originally known as the Hundred Guinea Cup, it was presented in 1851 by the Royal Yacht Squadron of *Cowes for a race round the Isle of Wight. The New York Yacht Club sent the schooner America to compete, and she defeated all the British contenders. The New York club renamed the trophy the America's Cup and has subsequently accepted challenges for it at varying intervals.
