A.J. Ayer
|
|
(Alfred Jules Ayer, 1910–89, kt 1970) English philosopher whose reputation was established early with his Language, Truth and Logic (1936). His book brought into English-language philosophy the approach known as logical positivism, developed originally in Vienna. An extreme version of empiricism (the theory of which *Berkeley was the leading British advocate), logical positivism rejected not only metaphysical statements but moral judgements too. This ruled out many of the traditional concerns of philosophy. Of those that remained, Ayer made linguistic analysis his special concern.
