(George Hamilton-Gordon, 1784–1860, 4th earl of Aberdeen 1801) Conservative politician, prime minister 1852–5. On the death of *Peel in 1850 he became leader of the 'Peelite' section of the Conservative party (those who approved of the repeal of the *Corn Laws), and in 1852 he formed a coalition government of Peelites and Liberals. His period in office was overshadowed by the *Crimean War, and was brought to an end by an adverse vote in the House of Commons on his conduct of the campaign.
