A conscious return in the second half of the 19C to the romantic idea of medieval craftsmanship. Inspired by John *Ruskin's passionate rejection of the machine age and by the socialist ideals of William *Morris, the aim was, in Morris's words, to rediscover 'art made by the people, and for the people, as a happiness to the maker and the user'. The most effective example of the idea in practice was Morris's own firm, founded in 1861.
